The Yakamazi Story

8. First Blood

When I opened my eyes I felt wet. I had no idea what was going on but my leg was open and was covered with blood. This was a better place to be then dead. It looked bad but the pain wasn't that great. I sat up to see that Ben was there and he was OK. I hadn't missed much as he was taking his spear out of his kill. I wiped my wound to see that it was just a burn with a small split of skin. My adrenalin must have been so high that the blood had just spilled out. It was a dull pulsing pain but it wasn't so bad that I couldn't roll myself over and get up.

It seemed as though I had got lucky. I limped over towards my hammer. I'd killed my target. Ben said that the other demons were all dead too so we'd be able to move back towards Leber once we were all regrouped. He congratulated me on my fine arm with the hammer. Had he not seen my fail? Maybe I hadn't had my eyes closed for long. Confused by this leaned down to pick up my weapon. I became interested in what I had apparently killed though. I was convinced that Ben had killed it and given me credit but I didn't ask. I just kept quiet. It wasn't as I'd imagined it to be from the stories. It pretty much looked human but with gray scaly skin and oddly placed horns. It had no clothes, no armour and seemed to be riddled in scars. Its blood was dark red and its eyes black, but it was definitely dead, and if I had actually killed it, then it wasn't really that hard to kill. I asked myself if I could do it again. If it was going to be that easy then I knew I could, but I didn't feel like this one counted. I was still unsure. I wanted to see my hammer hit home. I wanted to see the damage that I could deliver to these beasts that threatened my town and my people. I was getting more involved.

I picked up my hammer. I wrapped up my wound with a cloth that i borrowed from well equipped' Ben and I limped along side him until we had regrouped with the rest of the team. We had to bury a couple of fighters from our small army. I felt no emotion really, but I knew that had it been Ben, things would have been different. I pondered the lack of tactics that were involved. If we were organized maybe we wouldn't have lost anyone. I was in no position to take lead. I had passed out and embarrassed myself. Gabriel was the experienced warrior, what did I know. I kept my mouth shut.
